Located on the Payne county and Pawnee county boundries, Quay was originally known as Lawson named for the townsite owner Stonewall J. Lawson. The post office was established January 17th 1894, however the post office was redesignated as Quay on February 24th 1903 in honor of Pennsylvania Senator M.S. Quay.
