Cushing

Cushing is located in Payne county. The area was part of the Sac and Fox Reservation and included in grazing land leased by the Michigan-owned Turkey Track Ranch with headquarters eleven miles North of the future townsite. Even before the land run William (Billy Rae) Little had chosen a site on which he hoped to establish a townsite. After the run he built a house to establish his claim and then laid out town lots. The post office was established on November 10th 1891 and the new town was named for Marshall Cushing the private secretary to U.S. Postmaster General John Wanamaker.
